For newcomers to SF, I recommend finding neighborhood/s which capture your imagination and working from there. The Mission is easily the "coolest" neighborhood (adjoining Hayes Valley vibes similar), Golden Gate Park, Lands End, and Ocean Beach are primary outdoor destinations, the Marina a hotspot of nightlife for a (slightly) more conservative crowd, the Civic Center and Tenderloin are centroids of art and performance... and that's just the beginning :)
