A secret until Surfer Magazine published it in 1990, Mavericks hosts California's only big-wave surfâ–ş competition :)
Excited spectators crowd the ridge (and local parking) and wait (and wait) for monstrous waves of water to break far from the shore as little speck-sized surfers try to stay out in front.

In 2010, a crew of spectators were injured down on the beach, because they were caught off-guard by a big wave.....
